Question 01:
What is ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier?
Answer 01:
”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier is a thermo-chemical converter/Reactor, which
converts the Biomass (Such as Rice husk, Fire wood, Maize Cobbs, Mustert stalk,
groundnut shell, coconut Shell etc) into a high quality combustible gas called Producer
Gas.
Question 02:
What are the uses of the Producer Gas so produced?
Answer 02:
This gas can be used broadly as below.
(i) For Thermal Application: In Furnace/ oven /dryers/ Thermo pack/ Boiler/
Namkeen Bhatti/ Halwai Bhatti/ Re Rolling mill/ Alumunium & Brass Melting/ Annealing
furnace etc.
(ii) For Power Generation: 65% - 85% Diesel Saving in D.G. Sets in duel fuel mode
OR in Producer Gas Engine for low cost Power Generation.
Question 03:
Why the Cost of power/ Heat Generation by use of Biomass Gasification Technology
is so cheap/ economical?
Answer 03:
India is basically an Agricultural Country. Hence the Biomass is available in abundance
and at threw-away prices, while it has to import Petroleum Products to meet its
demand at a higher cost. For Example A litre of Diesel Costing Rs. 37.00/lts can
be replaced by 4-5 Kg of Biomass Costing Rs. 4.00 to Rs. 15.00 Only.
Question 04:
What are the Industries where the Biomass Gasifier can be used?
Answer 04:
The Gas produced from the Biomass Gasifier can be used gainfully in all such Industries
where fossil fuel i.e. Diesel, LDO, F.O., Coal etc for -
-Power generation: In Rice Mill, Cold Storage, Flour Mills, Paper Mills, Re Rolling
Mills, Process Industries dependent on continuous & uninterrupted power supply.
-Thermal Application: In all Kind of Furnace/ ovens/ Dryers Thermo Pack/ Boiler
units/ Re Rolling Mill/ Alumunium & Brass Melting/ Annealing and Re heating
Furnace etc.

Question 05:
Is this useful in Seasonal unit?
Answer 05:
Yes, In a way it is more useful for seasonal units as they can manage without taking
Electric Connection from the state electricity Board and save the minimum &
fixed charges. Which they have to pay when the unit is no running.

Question 06:
Do we need to have expert labour for operation & maintenance of ”Urja“
Biomass Gasifier System?
Answer 06:
No, The operation & Maintenance is very simple and your existing technicians/
labours can be easily trained during installation/commissioning.
Question 07:
What is the Annual Maintence Cost of ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier?
Answer 07:
”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier is almost maintence free & a maximum of
2% of Plant cost can be considered towards AMC.
Question 08:
Whether a NOC is required for setting ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier?
Answer 08:
No, no NOC is required from any Government Agency for setting up ”Urja“
Biomass Gasifier & in fact this is under Government Promotional scheme.
Question 09:
How much space is required for installation of ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifiers?
Answer 09:
The space requirement varies depending on the capacity of the plant say 100sqft
for 20 Kw to 1000sqft for a 500 Kw plant.
Question 10:
What are the capacities of the plants available?
Answer 10:
”Urja“ Biomass is available in a wide range from 10 Kwe to 500 Kwe for
Power Generation & 25,000 Kcal to 12,50,000 Kcal for thermal application.
Question 11:
Does this plant generate any pollution?
Answer 11:
No, this does not cause any pollution. Infact it is Eco-friendly and reduces the
green house Gas emission, Acid rain etc and is eligible for CDM benefits under clean
Development mechanism.
Question 12:
What is the duel fuel system pertaining to a Diesel Engine?
Answer 12:
Generally, duel fuel means use of two different fuels in the same Engine. With ”Urja“
Biomass Gasifier system, the Diesel Engine is operated simultaneously on diesel
as well as the producer gas obtained from the Gasifier.
Generally, it needs only 15-35% of Diesel and the balance 85%-65% is made up the
Producer gas. No modification is done in the Engine for operation in Duel fuel mode.
Question 13:
What is the delivery period for supply of ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier
system?
Answer 13:
Generally the delivery period is 3 to 4 months, However it can be supplied within
a month time and out of turn on an additional payment of 5% of the plant cost.
Question 14:
What is the savings or the payback of the System?
Answer 14:
As a Thumb rule 4-5 Kg of biomass replaces 1-litre of Diesel.
The payback period is generally 4 to 9 months depending upon the capacity of the
plant, running hours of the Gasifier & the price of biomass available.
Question 15:
How Popular is this system?
Answer 15:
This is a relatively new technology & with increase in price of fossil fuel
(Diesel, FO, LDO, Coal) & poor state Power Supply & need for economical
uninterrupted power supply this system is gaining popularity both for Power Generation
as well as in thermal application, as it provides cheaper & dependable power/
Heat.
Question 16:
Is there any subsidy & incentive on ”Urja“ Biomass Gasifiers from
Government?
Answer 16:
”Urja“ Biomass Gasifier are approved & recognized from the Government
and hence eligible for subsidy/ incentives.
[Subsidy 20% to 50% depending on Capacity of the System].
